Prairie du Sac lines the west bank of the Wisconsin River, twinned with Sauk City just downstream, famous for the bald eagles that winter over the open water below the dam and for Wollersheim Winery on the bluff across the river. We come up US 12 from Madison and swing over on Highway 78, and the Sauk Prairie towns mark the northwest corner of our regular map.

River-town housing here runs in layers up from the water: older homes near Water Street and the original village grid, mid-century blocks behind them, and newer subdivisions climbing toward the bluffs. The older garages are the narrow, detached kind that predate two-car life, and the hillside builds trade that problem for driveways that turn into toboggan runs every January. Both kinds of properties keep us honest, and both fit the same flat-quote process.
